Canadian Army Works to Ensure Soldier's Readiness for Foreign Missions |
Canada's Ministry of Defense is considering a new proposal by the army aimed at providing better equipment for soldiers in an effort to avoid such problems as those the ill-equipped troops have faced in Haiti earlier this year.
Internal documents said the peacekeepers sent to Haiti were left "prodding and begging" for basic equipment when they arrived in the troubled Caribbean country.
Lt Col Steve Strachan said the new proposal would ensure troops are well-equipped for external missions and will be introduced as early as January.
"We're going to have a complete set of equipment that can outfit a battalion group on short notice," Strachan said on Tuesday.
The equipment will likely be kept in a central warehouse in Trenton, Ontario, or Montreal, he said.
About 500 soldiers from CFB Gagetown were airlifted to Haiti last spring.
